“With New Jersey’s residents and businesses experiencing surging energy costs, committees from both houses of the Legislature will work together to investigate the recent spike in rates and examine the factors contributing to the rising costs,” said Senator Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen, Passaic), Chair of the Senate Select Committee. “Utilities are basic necessities in our daily lives, and we need to undertake a comprehensive assessment.”

Amid mounting concerns over increasing utility costs, legislators have introduced a comprehensive package of bills aimed at delivering immediate relief to struggling households while pursuing long-term reforms to New Jersey’s utility regulatory system. The upcoming hearing will provide lawmakers with deeper insight into the factors driving rising costs and inform policies that will stabilize rates, enhance oversight, and protect consumers.

“This issue is about more than just rising utility costs; it’s about creating a future where all New Jerseyans, regardless of their income or location, can access the energy they need to live, work, and thrive without fear of being priced out,” said Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer, Middlesex), Chair of the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. “At the end of the day, we must do everything in our power to ensure that no one is left without answers or support in this time of need. I am grateful for the opportunity to come together with my colleagues to address this challenge and look forward to laying the groundwork for a more affordable and reliable energy future.”
