Sean Riggin Appointed as AC Public Safety Director

ATLANTIC CITY – The City of Atlantic City has appointed Sean Riggin as its new Public Safety Director, a move aimed at enhancing the city’s ongoing Clean & Safe initiative. Riggin will oversee operations of both the Atlantic City Police and Fire Departments, focusing on public safety improvements and resource allocation.

Mayor Marty Small Sr. emphasized the significance of this appointment, stating, "Improved public safety is a huge priority for the Small Administration’s Clean & Safe Agenda. Adding Sean will take us to the next level with our Police & Fire Departments. We will continue to provide the necessary tools that are conducive to good public safety."

Riggin brings more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, emergency management, and community engagement. His career began as a Civil Affairs soldier under the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, where he gained crisis management experience in Sarajevo during the Balkan conflict. He has since served as a police chief, fire director, and emergency management coordinator in Pleasantville and recently worked as a DCA police monitor in Atlantic City.

Jacquelyn A. Suárez, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), expressed strong support for Riggin’s appointment. "Sean is a dynamic public safety professional with more than 25 years of experience," said Suárez. "His tremendous expertise combined with his knowledge of Atlantic City make him an excellent choice for this role. DCA looks forward to continuing to work with Sean, and we are confident the city community will find him to be a skilled public servant and communicator."

In his new position, Riggin will manage and establish policies for the city’s police and fire departments, secure necessary equipment, and help resolve contract issues with unions when needed. His leadership will play a crucial role in advancing the city’s safety measures.

"Public safety is something we need to feel but shouldn’t have to think about," Riggin said. "I want Atlantic City’s responders to have the trust, support, and leadership they need to focus on their critical work to keep all city residents, workers, and visitors safe."

Riggin holds a master’s degree in disaster science and emergency management from the University of Delaware and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Aspen University. Additionally, he has worked as an emergency management specialist, providing disaster recovery support across New Jersey, and has been an instructor with the International Criminal Investigative Training and Assistance Program.

With Riggin at the helm of public safety efforts, Atlantic City continues its commitment to creating a cleaner and safer environment for its residents and visitors.
