ABSECON - The Bangladeshi-American community in Atlantic City commemorated Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day 2025 with a heartfelt tribute to linguistic and cultural heritage.

Observed annually on February 21, International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism. This day holds deep significance for Bangladeshis, honoring the sacrifices of language martyrs who fought to preserve the Bengali language.

On Thursday, February 20, 2025, Bangladeshi-American leaders and community members gathered at Travel Lodge in Absecon for an event celebrating their ethnic heritage.

The program featured a roundtable discussion on the significance of the day, emphasizing its role in fostering global unity, respect for languages, and cultural preservation. Kazol Sarkar and Kazi Arif Likhon conducted the event.

Speakers highlighted the contributions of language martyrs to Bengali nationalism and their impact on human rights, freedom, and inclusion. They urged the community to protect and promote all mother tongues while embracing the spirit of linguistic diversity.

At 12:01 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, community leaders and members paid tribute to the language martyrs by offering wreaths. Various social, cultural, and political organizations, along with a large number of expatriate Bangladeshis, also placed floral tributes.

The event featured musical performances by Joyonta Sinha, Asif Anowar, and Ruku Zaman. Writer and journalist Subrata Chowdhury recited a poem.

To ensure the event’s success, a committee was formed, led by Miraj Khan (Convener), Moniruzzaman Monir, and Forhad Siddiq (Member Secretary).

Leaders from various Bangladeshi associations, including Zahirul Islam Babul (President) and Zakirul Islam Khoka (Secretary) of Bangladesh Association of South Jersey, as well as Shahid Khan (President) and Suhel Ahmed (Secretary) of Bangladesh Association of Atlantic County, Rana Kabir (President) and Kazol Sarkar (Secretary) of Bengal Club expressed their gratitude to all participants.

The event underscored the enduring commitment of the Bangladeshi-American community to preserving their language, culture, and history for future generations.
