CHICAGO – Stephine Dixon of Atlantic City is serving as one of three Atlantic County Delegates to the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Up until a month ago, President Joe Biden was expected to take on former President Donald J. Trump, a long-time Atlantic City icon, for the presidency in November. But after a disastrous June 27 debate in which Biden struggled to gather his thoughts after a full day of campaigning, while battling a cold, many in the party said it was time for Biden to relinquish the bid for the nation’s highest office. After much consideration and calls for change, Biden effectively handed the leadership baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, on July 21, 2024, a move that reenergized the party and sparked a wave of support for Harris.

When delegates arrived in Chicago for the DNC on Monday, they were greeted with receptions and parties, Dixon said. Senator Corey Booker was the breakfast speaker.

The delegates also went on a networking cruise. “There were so many events you couldn’t attend them all,” said Dixon. “It goes on and on and on.”

The main event, however, was at United Center where the lineup of distinguished speakers included President Joe Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, the Biden's daughter Ashley, a social worker and activist and former presidential candidate and First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Dixon said the speeches were uplifting but she could see how much of a sacrifice it took for President Biden to step aside. “For Joe to give the gavel to Kamala Harris, it had to be really hard,” Dixon said. “But he thought about us, the people, first. Even though he wanted to go through with his second term.”

President Biden used his nearly hour-long speech to make the case for the entire country supporting Harris and touted his administration’s accomplishments.

“Folks, I’ve got five months left in my presidency. I’ve got a lot to do. I intend to get it done,” Biden said. “It’s been the honor of my lifetime to serve as president. I love the job. But I love my country more.” Biden clad in a dark suit, white shirt and blue tie, spoke passionately as he affirmed Harris, and she looked on.

“It was amazing. It also showed you how strong he is,” Dixon said. “Just because of one debate people were tearing him down, but you could tell he still had it in him.”

Delegates Atlantic County Democratic Committee Chairman Mike Suleiman, Dixon, and Frank Mahoney, voted on July 25, to make Vice President Kamala Harris the official presidential nominee for Atlantic County. Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.

“I thought it was really great,” Dixon said. “I love Joe (Biden). I’m definitely going to say an extra prayer for him and his family because it took a lot for him to do what he did.”
