AC's Venice Park Celebrates Early Completion of Ohio Avenue Bridge Reconstruction

ATLANTIC CITY – Venice Park residents are celebrating the early reopening of the Ohio Avenue Bridge over the Venice Lagoon—known locally as the "Second Bridge"—marking a major infrastructure milestone.

Originally slated for a two-year reconstruction period, the bridge is now open to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic ahead of schedule.

“While previous administrations applied quick fixes, we rebuilt these bridges from the ground up to ensure they last for decades,” said Mayor Marty Small, Sr.“I thank the Venice Park community for their patience throughout these projects. Despite the detours, they never once complained.”

The project, which began in August 2023, involved a full rebuild, replacing deteriorating timber pile bents with durable concrete-filled steel pipes. The newly reconstructed bridge features a shared bike lane, sidewalks on both sides, and steel sheet pile bulkheads for added structural integrity.

In 2021, the city made emergency repairs to stabilize the bridge until it could be replaced. A single, alternating lane will always remain open during the construction.

Mayor Small Delivers on Infrastructure Commitment

Mayor Small expressed his pride in fulfilling a promise to the Venice Park community, ensuring both "First Bridge" and "Second Bridge" were reconstructed within his first full four-year term.

City Engineer Uzo Ahiarakwe echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the project’s efficiency and community impact.

“This project is a testament to Mayor Small’s commitment to improving the quality of life in Atlantic City,”said Ahiarakwe. “Finishing a two-year project in a year and a half—under budget—is a remarkable achievement. Credit is also due to the Venice Park community for their cooperation and feedback throughout the process.”

A Strategic and Cost-Effective Approach

Built in 1969, the “Second Bridge” was replaced in stages, allowing a single alternating lane of traffic to remain open with temporary signals, ensuring continuous access. The $6.85 million project was funded through the American Rescue Plan and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), with no cost to taxpayers.

The project team included:

  • Design Engineer: French and Parrello Associates
  • Construction Management & Inspection: Remington & Vernick Engineers
  • Contractor: South State, Inc.

This milestone follows the successful completion of the Ohio Avenue Bridge over Penrose Canal—known as "First Bridge"—in November 2022 after a year-long reconstruction.

With both bridges now fully rebuilt, Venice Park residents can enjoy safer, more reliable infrastructure for years to come.
