A Closer Look: Atlantic City Aquarium Reopens After Five Years

The Atlantic City Aquarium at Historic Gardner’s Basin has reopened its doors for the first time in five years. Mayor Marty Small Sr. led the ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 24, 2025, celebrating the return of one of the city's beloved attractions.

Visitors can once again explore exhibits featuring over 100 aquatic species, including Groman, the 225-pound loggerhead sea turtle. Other highlights include diamondback terrapins, rays, seahorses, and lionfish.

Renovations brought a fresh look to both the interior and exterior. New features include an “Under the Sea” coloring area, a hurricane simulator, and a photo booth. By early summer, six hands-on touch tanks will debut on the second floor, offering interactive feeding shows.

The reopening follows years of pandemic-related delays and extensive repairs, made possible with support from the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and additional funding from the American Rescue Plan. Local artists and community groups also contributed, adding colorful murals and enhancing the surrounding grounds.

Managed by the City of Atlantic City’s Department of Public Works, the aquarium is now open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For admission details, visit www.acnj.gov/pages/acaquarium or call 609-348-2880.
